A few popular dishes you can find in Jordan are falafel, hummus, mansaf (Jordan's national dish), maqluba, shawarma and knafeh. Today, I'm going to focus the dessert called knafeh.
I have had knafeh (ku-na-fuh) a few times. Thankfully it's a rare treat. If I ate it too often, my dentist would probably be upset!
Knafeh is unlike anything I've ever tasted. Before trying knafeh, I don't think I'd ever had a cheese dessert. Each situation in which I've eaten knafeh has been in a social setting, so I've always felt happy and enjoyed eating the dessert. The first time I was in a city called Madaba, and the person who made knafeh (they must have been a specialist in making the dish) made a performance of it and was spinning the round plate it's made on, dancing to music and adding ingredients all at the same time. The few other times I've had it were with friends in downtown Amman, and once at work when a cowoker bought a house. He brought knafeh to celebrate with everyone!
