The unique thing about Montpellier is that it is a city, but the beach is nearby, and in the opposite direction you have mountains. People here are attracted to the city to live, but they gravitate to the countryside on the weekends, taking a trip to the beach or hiking the mountains. Closer to the mountains are where most of the vineyards and olive plantations are located. While olives and wine are not necessary for life, they are necessary for farmers here to survive, as this is how these people make their money. The fertile land allows for fruits and vegtables to be grown on the outskirts of the city.
