If you're planning on taking a trip to Morocco, it's important to know that you will be encountering a lot of cats. If you're a cat person, this is great. If you're not, like me, this visit will be a little difficult. In Morocco, cats are seen as sacred. In the Islamic religion, people believe all things were put on the earth by God for a reason and will therefore be provided for (by humans!). While the cats are strays, locals and some tourists treat them like their own, petting or feeding them.
There are a great variety of cats roaming the streets of Marrakech. Some look just like the cats you may have in your home. I saw cats of all sizes, including kittens, cats with missing eyes and some who were limping--all of these in a wide range of colors.
However, no matter how cute these cats may be, I just could not trust them. I am not at all a cat lover and upon contact, I instantly start sneezing and my eyes begin to itch. Because cats are seen as sacred in Morocco, I was not scared of them lunging at me, but I was, definitely, a little uncomfortable. To me, cats are sneaky creatures who will do anything to get what they want, whether that be a rub on the head or a piece of chicken.
