Bangkok, like New York City, is a big, bustling city. With a population of just over eight million people, it's no wonder the city never stops moving! Like most international big cities, Bangkok has a large metro, or skytrain, system to allow people to get easily around the heart of the city. Whether by taking the metro, a taxi, bus, ferry or simply walking, there are many ways to get around Bangkok.
The most popular mode of transportation in Bangkok is walking for shorter distances or taking a bus or cab. However, in Bangkok there are other types of cabs to choose from in addition to the traditional four door taxi cab, including a taxi motorcycle and a tuk-tuk. All throughout the city there are motorcycle drivers in orange vests that let pedestrians know they are taxi motorcycle drivers, and tuk-tuks are a special kind of taxi-car that are easy to spot. For normal taxi cabs or the bus and metro systems, there are meters or set prices to help determine how much each person will pay. A meter is a sort of clock in the taxi cab that measures how long (time) and far (distance) a taxi cab has traveled. For tuk-tuks and taxi motorcycles, however, you have to bargain on the prices. This means that instead of everyone getting the same price for the same distance, it is up to the rider and driver to reach an agreement on how much the ride will cost.
