A pit-stop in Amman, Jordan

Introduction:

This past week, I was in Amman, which is the capital city of Jordan. I was given this opportunity to travel with my cohort of Israeli Fulbrights to present my research that I am conducting here in Israel. During my time in Jordan, not only did I get to meet other researchers like me, but I also had the opportunity to explore the city and try all the amazing food that Jordan has to offer!

What food did I try?:

In Jordan, I was able to try many different types of food. I started my journey with a classic laffa sandwich filled with smoked, asado-type meat, which tasted a bit like steak. From there, I traveled to various restaurants with my friends. At one of the restuarants in Madaba, I tried a traditional dish called musakhan. This dish was made up of sumac-spiced chicken, topped with seared red onions, pine nuts, and placed atop a large piece of shrak bread.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

Musakhan is a dish that really makes you feel part of the culture. At my table, you would see all of us trying this dish with our hands - taking a piece of the bread and pulling apart the tender chicken, making a small hand sandwich of sorts. This way of eating is traditional and true to the dish.

How is the food prepared?:

The dish is relatively easy to make!
