Table Mountain is Cape Town's landmark geographical feature. I could see it from the airplane when I was first arriving to the city, and I was immediately blown away by this natural wonder. I couldn't believe that I was seeing Table Mountain with my own eyes! I couldn't wait to hike on one of the many trails or to take the cable car up to see the city from up above.
Have you ever seen a mountain with a flat top before? Every other mountain I have ever seen has a triangular peak! Believe it or not, what is now Table Mountain was once the bottom of a valley! Erosion and weathering over time have washed away the layers of softer dirt and rock, leaving behind only the hard granite that makes up Table Mountain today. Because of its breathtaking and one-of-a-kind shape, Table Mountain has been classified as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature! On some afternoons with the right combination of wind and humidity, a cloud resembling a waterfall forms over the mountain. Locals call this breathtaking sight the "tablecloth"!
