The word Verenyky comes from the verb "veryty" which means to boil. In English, Verenyky means "things that have been boiled". Making varenyky can take a long time so it is often done together as a family. It was a very fun activity to do with my friends!
This week I tried two different types of Verenyky. The first was filled with potatoes and onion and the second was filled with cottage cheese. Verenyky is normally eaten with a side of sour cream. Sometimes the cottage cheese verenyky are eaten with jam!
I was excited to try the potato and onion varenyky because they smelled very delicious! They were really tasty and I hope I get to have them again before I go home. When it was time to try the cottage cheese varenyky, I was very nervous. I do not like cottage cheese and I am a very picky eater. Although I was scared, I tried them and they actually tasted very nice! Cottage cheese in Estonia is a little bit different than the cottage cheese we eat in the U.S. It is sweeter and much more popular. Normally it is eaten with sour cream but I was not feeling adventurous enough to try it! Although the cottage cheese verenyky tasted good, I prefer the potato and onion ones!
