I want to stay clean and take care of myself, so I’ve also packed all the toiletries I need for two months, such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, moisturizer, and hair products. I also packed a couple of luxuries, like a fancy face mask (one per week) and a lavender-scented body wash. Remember, I can't go to the store if I've forgotten something important!
There are excellent chefs and bakers onboard, so I don't need to bring my regular food. However, it’s great to bring snacks and candy, and I had a lot of fun picking out some treats at the grocery store in Iceland. While some treats look familiar, Iceland has several candies that I'm not used to, so I bought them to try onboard. I was especially excited to find several kinds of salted licorice, which I loved growing up in Canada but is rare to find in the United States. When I travel around the world, I really enjoy going to the grocery store! Food is a great way to notice similarities and differences between my culture and the one I'm visiting. Next time you travel, go to the grocery store just to look at the food available. It's fun! I also brought a water bottle and an insulated mug for coffee and tea and bought several flavors of herbal tea in Iceland.
What about electronics? We won’t have any cell phone service onboard, but we have satellite internet service and of course, I want to take lots of photos. I packed my phone, three cameras, extra battery packs, my computer, and all the charging cables I’ll need plus an international adapter plug. I'm especially excited about the new 360-degree camera and I’ll be setting up a Virtual Reality 360-degree tour of the JOIDES Resolution which I'll share in the coming weeks!
