The Journey Before the Expedition

How many LEGO fans are there out there? For entertainment, I also packed a very special LEGO set with me - the brand-new LEGO Arctic Explorer Ship. It’s so cool that this LEGO ship will be sailing onboard a real Arctic Explorer Ship! All of us onboard will assemble this LEGO ship, and maybe it can even go for a quick swim in the ocean. Explorers usually bring some form of entertainment with them because we are away from our friends, family, and regular routines. Building this LEGO set will definitely be fun!

Lastly, all my packing has to fit into soft-sided luggage. On a ship, there is very little storage for large, hard-sided empty suitcases, but duffle bags and backpacks squish nicely and can be stored in the back of a drawer or closet. Packing for a two-month expedition is challenging, but I did it!

How do people get around?:

How do the expedition scientists and crew get to the port?

First, let's find the port city on a map. If you know how to find coordinates on a map, use an atlas to locate 64 degrees N latitude and 21 degrees W longitude. There you will find Reykjavík, Iceland. Or, you can look that city up using an online map or atlas. You'll notice that Iceland is an island nation. Think of the available methods of transportation to get to Iceland from other countries in the world.

On this expedition, we have 117 scientists and crew from Britain, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the Philippines, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, and the USA. You can locate these countries on a map to see just how far everyone has to travel to reach Iceland.
