The bagpipe, or gaita, is a very typical instrument in Asturias, and many of my students can play it. This week, one student brought his bagpipe to school and played it for me!
The city of Oviedo just finished celebrating San Mateo, which is the biggest celebration of the year. I attended parades and concerts, watched fireworks and ate lots of traditional food this week. Each evening there was a different event happening in the city center. I had a lot of fun celebrating with everyone!
One of the first things I did when I arrived in Oviedo was to get a library card! Reading is one of the best ways to learn a second language. This week, I started reading El Principe de la Niebla by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. In English, the book is called "The Prince of the Mist."
I have been playing lots of word games with the students in my classes. I love using games to help teach them new vocabulary!
Sometimes people who speak both Spanish and Asturiano will use words from both languages while they speak. This makes it a little bit difficult for me to understand them, but it is helping me learn lots of new words in both languages!
