In Madrid, the main language spoken is Spanish, also called Castellano. Spanish is used by almost everyone in daily life, at school, and at work. It’s the official language of Spain and many other countries around the world!
Besides Spanish, regional languages are spoken in different parts of Spain, like Catalan in Barcelona, Galician in the northwest, and Basque in the north. In Madrid, however, you’ll mostly hear Spanish. Since Madrid is the capital, people from all over the world live here, so you might also hear English, French, Arabic, or Chinese from visitors or residents. It’s fun to listen to so many different languages in one place!
In Madrid, and throughout Spain, the type of money used is the Euro (€). The euro is the currency used in many countries in Europe. Coins come in different sizes, with values like 1 cent, 2 cents, and 50 cents, while the bills are colorful and come in amounts like 5, 10, and 20 euros. It’s fun to use euros because the designs on the coins and bills often show symbols from different European countries! For example, Spain’s coins sometimes feature famous landmarks or historical figures like King Felipe VI.
