The main language is Spanish, but English is also common in businesses and tourist areas. Many immigrant communities bring other languages, such as Korean in Colonia Juárez’s Pequeño Seúl (Little Seoul), which helps me connect to my heritage. Smaller Indigenous languages, including Nahuatl and Mixtec, are also spoken.
The currency is the Mexican peso, abbreviated MXN. Coins come in one, two, five, 10 and 20 pesos, and bills come in 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 pesos. One U.S. dollar is roughly 18 to 20 pesos, and many places accept both cash and credit card.
Water prices depend on the brand, size and store. A one-liter bottle of ePura costs about 16 pesos, and a ten-liter bottle is around 47 pesos. Tap water is not safe to drink, so people often buy large containers called garrafones. I usually buy the ten-liter bottles because the garrafones are too heavy to carry back to my apartment.
