The Sami people speak a language that is a member of the Uralic linguistic group along with languages such as Finnish, Estonian and Hungarian. While the Sami language is very different than Finnish, in their culture, it is very common in Lapland to speak only Sami.
In the Sami culture, it is very common to use a trading system within their Sami community. However, because Lapland is part of Finland, the euro is also used as a form of currency.
A bottle of water costs about two Euro! Similar to Helsinki, but because the water is so fresh, many people use the water from the faucet.
Even though I loved visiting a school that was next to a Rovaniemi reindeer farm, and even got to pet a reindeer. I was invited to go to one of the teacher's houses for dinner. At dinner, I was offered reindeer as part of the meat portion of our meal. I tried it, reluctantly, and realized it was very tasty! I just feel sorry for the poor reindeer!
