This week, the most talked-about news was the Kim-Trump summit. According to reports, the summit in Vietnam ended with no results. Kim asked Trump to lift key sanctions in return for partial denuclearization. These sanctions have devastated the North Korean economy, as small as it already is. However, Trump was adamant at obtaining full commitment towards denuclearization before he would consider lifting the said sanctions.
The issue of the denuclearization of North Korea has been a well-debated topic. We also talked a lot about this in some of my classes last fall. One argument involved putting ourselves in the position of North Korea. If North Korea completely denuclearizes, then the country would be completely defenseless. On the other hand, South Korea has allies with the United States, and the latter itself is a nuclear power. Does it seem quite fair to ask them to completely give up all defenses? It's just something to think about...
Have you ever been in any arguments that end in a standstill? How can a compromise be reached in this kind of situation?
