When I came to Korea last summer, I felt a lot of mixed emotions. I had a lot of reasons to feel nervous, but I knew that there was a positive side to all of the challenges I would be facing. Not knowing Korean beforehand was an opportunity to learn another language. Leaving home for a long time was a chance to delve into a new work experience and get to know more people. I could learn to cook new foods, grow out of my comfort zone, take up new hobbies and interests--everything had an upside.

Many people say that living in another country and culture can be a rewarding experience. I have found this to be true in my previous experiences abroad, and especially so during my time in Korea. I truly believe living in another country is one of the best ways to learn about another culture and language. A year ago I knew very little about Korean culture, language and food. Today, I feel connected with so many people in my town of Hwacheon, who I will miss so much when I leave. Even on a personal level, the experience of living abroad can be a chance for growth. It's easy to grow comfortable in our day-to-day routines and habits, but living in another culture forces you to adapt to new rules and see the world through a different lens.
