So in this case, this type of environment has helped some people get jobs. I was told that those bananas cannot be picked by random people to eat because the exportation of bananas is strictly accounted for.
There are a lot of challenges that come from people living around here. The plantation is owned by the government, and all the bananas have to be picked and wrapped up. There are a lot of trees, which means that the workers work long days. The people around here also can be responsible for wrecking part of the plantation from creating unnecessary waste and taking away natural resources that the plants need. The people living here also run into the problem of traveling far to get food, water, and their necessities. There are also no schools around here. Lastly, another problem is that while the land is very rich and Ecuador gets a lot of money for exporting bananas and cacao, sadly, the workers don’t get a lot of money at all. My host mom told me that the maximum that one worker gets is $10.00 a day! It seems very hard living in the middle of this plantation maze, but it seems like some dont have the choice.
When I asked my host family why people stay working for so little, she told me that they don’t have an option. Unfortunately, most of the people who live in Pangua move here because of work. My host mom told me that they have to forget about the conditions and work to earn a living. The children there grow up knowing only what they know. So the children don’t have a problem with how they live because they think that’s how everyone else lives.
