Biking Across Town

Introduction:

The most popular mode of transportation in New York City, where I am from, is public transportation. There is an abundance of trains and buses that can get you anywhere you want in the city. My daily commute to school takes two different trains and a little bit over an hour. The public transportation system is convenient because it operates 24 hours a day. Although the service is less frequent at off-peak hours such as late night, one can still manage to get somewhere at any time of the night. During peak hours, the trains are packed with all types of people from all walks of life, including students, business professionals, artists and performers. Even celebrities have been spotted taking trains!

In the city center of Chengdu, China, trains and buses are also popular modes of transportation. However, since I am living about 45 minutes outside of the city center in a district called Wenjiang, life is different here. The most frequently used mode of transportation is actually the bicycle.

How do people get around?:

During my first week here in Wenjiang, I bought a second-hand bicycle from a shop not too far from my apartment. It didn’t take me long to learn that a bicycle is a very convenient way to get around. All the locals have bicycles, and on my university campus bicycles are parked in front of every building.
