Biking Across Town

The university campus is quite large, and having a bicycle to move from one class to the next has actually saved me from being late several times.

Outside of the university campus, locals use their bicycles to travel to local markets as well as around town. The roads here are nicely paved and even, so traveling is a breeze. Wenjiang itself is not very large. Much of the population are university students – there are five universities in Wenjiang, include a medical university and my university for finance and economics. Imagine there that there are an average of 20,000 students in each school. That’s 100,000 students overall!

A large number of these students live in the dorms and are unable to have a car. At most, some have electric motorcycles, but the majority have to rely on their bicycles for transportation. In addition, many of the housing units here in Wenjiang are tall apartment building with very limited garage space in the basements. Even those who aren’t students must rely on bicycles to get around.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

I was ecstatic when I bought my bicycle. I love the feeling of the wind blowing in my face as I zip through my campus. While many people opt for a basic bicycle just so they could get around easily, I chose a bicycle with eight speeds that folds up. It is very convenient and fast. I’m planning to ship my bicycle back to New York after the semester is over!

Going from place to place is actually quite convenient with a bicycle. Being able to get from one place to another in a lot less time than walking allows me to utilize my time more efficiently. I have more time to study or spend with my friends as a result.
