Biking Across Town

The only setback, however, is that moving so quickly on a bicycle means that you don’t have the opportunity to meet new people. As I ride through campus, I sometimes wave to my friends or fellow classmates, but I noticed that I’ve never stopped to meet new people. Maybe that’s something that I need to work on and incorporate into my bike rides.

Is this way of getting around connected to the culture and environment, How?:

Bicycles have been a big part of Chinese cultures for many years. Even in old Chinese films, you can see countless people in the backgrounds on their bicycles. I think that given the university student environment of Wenjiang, bicycles are essential for daily use. Due to limited funds and resources for other forms of transportation like cars and taxis, bicycles are an obvious choice.

In addition to that, bicycles are an environmentally friendly choice of transportation. I’ve noticed that many of the motorcycles and other vehicles are electric rather than running on fuel or diesel. Many parts of China face serious pollution problems, due to, amongst other things, industrialization. So people do their best to minimize their carbon footprints. While electric vehicles are better for traveling longer distances, bicycles are superior to any other option for short-distance travel.
