Southampton is 365 miles south of Dumfries, on the southern coast of Great Britain (the big island containing England, Scotland and Wales, all countries in the United Kingdom, except for the province Northern Ireland, which is located on the neighboring island of Ireland).
I have gone as far north as Mallaig, which is 223 miles north of Dumfries. That makes Southampton the furthest I have traveled and my total explorations in the U.K. add up to about 700 miles!
After flying in to the London-Heathrow airport on a giant Boeing 787 airplane, I took a two hour coach ride (large bus) from the airport to Southampton. To return to Dumfries, I took a train journey of over six hours!
One of my favorite places in Dumfries is the River Nith that runs through the town. There are beautiful trails on each side of the water and several brick bridges pass over the river. I enjoy taking long walks along the river, which is part of my 45 minute walk to campus most days.
