December 6th in Luxembourg: Kleeserchersdag!

Introduction:

In Luxembourg, December 6th is Kleeserchersdag, or, Saint Nicholas Day, and it is almost as important to the Luxembourgish people as December 25th, when they celebrate Christmas.

What tradition did I learn about?:

On December 6th, children leave out their shoes. If they have been good, Saint Nicholas is said to visit and leave sweets either in their shoes or on a plate that is set next to the shoes. In my school, the students also celebrate Kleeserchersdag by pranking the teachers, putting up a Christmas tree, and handing out candy. There were even several students dressed up like Saint Nicholas (who has a different outfit than our traditional “Santa Claus” in the hallways. Luxembourgers will also eat Boxemännchen, which is like a gingerbread man made out of pastry.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

As a predominantly Christian country with a deeply Catholic history, Luxembourg has many holidays that center around celebrating Saints and Biblical figures or combatting winter gloom.
