Savoring Seoul: My Korean Food Adventure

Introduction:

One of the biggest things I worried about before moving to South Korea was the food! I’m not a picky eater, but I love having lots of different options. Back home in the United States, I could eat all kinds of food—Mexican, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Thai, Greek, German, and even Korean! I wasn’t sure if I would have as many choices in Korea.

Luckily, Yonsei University, where I’m studying, understands that students from other countries might worry about food. That’s why the dorm I’m staying in has many different food options! Right in my building, there’s a convenience store (Emart24), a café (Paik’s Bakery & Coffee), a Korean restaurant (Jesun Restaurant & Insaeng Seolleongtang), and even an American-style burger place (No Brand Burger). That means I can find plenty of tasty food without even stepping outside—pretty awesome, right?

What food did I try?:

Yonsei University has a lot of cafeterias and dining halls that serve various Korean dishes. I’ve tried a bunch of them, but here are three that stood out!

Here, I tried Jjajangbap (짜장밥), a dish with black bean sauce served over rice and topped with a fried egg. The sauce, called Jjajang, is made from black bean paste mixed with cabbage, onions, pork, and seasonings.
