My Home in Tromsø: Enduring Its Undeniable Allure

Have you traveled? Where have you traveled to?:

I have seen a lot of Norway, from the north to the south. I can confirm the opportunities for adventure are endless for outdoor enthusiasts. My September 2022 camping trip with my dear friends to Narvik has been my favorite trip. We explored a dreamlike area, picked up trash together and saw the true power of the northern lights without Tromsø’s light pollution. On that trip, we also camped in Sweden’s Abisko National Park, an ethereal place of arctic plants and majestic mountains.

What do you do for work?:

I am a scientist. Now, more specifically, I would call myself a wildlife geneticist. These days, I work primarily with Greenland shark DNA to create new tools to determine their age better and find them deep in the ocean without ever seeing them. These are new technologies that depend on the globe's collaborative research to become better. In the future, I would like to study more animals' DNA and build unique genomes.

I spend a lot of time in front of a computer or the lab. I have never seen a live Greenland shark!

Is there anything else you would like to say to students in the United States?:

As students of the United States, you possess a massive voice on the global stage to demand positive changes for our planet. When following your future career paths, consider applying your talents and skills to protecting the inhabitants of this biodiverse planet. U.S. students can lead the global movement for environmental justice and human responsibility. Thanks for reading!
