Seaside Stewards: Empowering Youth Through Microplastic Citizen Science

We need more young people to document our changing world. Alongside students from Grødem Skole, we cleaned Sandestranden (Sande Beach) and measured the microplastic in the sand with U.S. filters.

With a scale, a bucket, a few meter sticks and our filters, we weighed and then sifted the top layer of sand in a 1x1 M square in the high tide line
Back in the lab, the students looked closely through the organic material for what is unnatural
'What could this be?', 'What was this before?', 'How much is there?'
Fourth and seventh graders collaborated together to make meaningful scientific contributions to pressing environmental issues
The time is now to empower young eco-leaders to document and take ownership of their local environment's health
We hope that this reached people across the world and it inspired them to take ownership of their communities
In three months, Sandestranden will be cleaned again. Only tremendous changes can prevent this
