Living With the River Exe

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

Because Exeter is on a river, parts of the city can be affected by flooding. In 1960, one notable flood covered some parts of the city in over six feet of water, damaging many buildings and endangering people. After this incident, millions of pounds were spent to build structures that would help prevent flooding.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

After 1960, flood relief channels and new bridges were built to better guard the city against flooding. In 2015, 30 million more pounds were allocated for flood defenses. This time, the city deepened drains to improve water flow and removed some older check dams. Combatting flooding is an ongoing issue in Exeter, but living by a beautiful river makes it worth it.
