Combating Homelessness in Exeter

Introduction:

Exeter is a big town filled with many residents and students. Many of these people frequent the city center where most of the shops and restaurants are located, along with Exeter Cathedral. Wandering through the streets, you will also come across many people asking for money and help from others, or even sleeping on the sidewalks at night. Homelessness is an important issue present in Exeter and all over the world.

What community need did I learn about?:

I learned about homelessness in Exeter because I regularly come across people affected by it while wandering around town. I read a 2017 article on this issue that states that Exeter is one of the places in England with the highest number of rough sleepers, or people having to sleep on the streets. Fortunately, the government, many charities and Exeter residents are working to help people in that situation.

Why does the community have this need?:

People can become homeless for many reasons. They could have lost their jobs, not been able to afford housing, left their families because of abuse or other negative situations, along with many other possible causes. Most of these people never thought they would have ended up in this poor situation, but luckily many organizations and citizens in Exeter are helping these homeless people to recover.
