The weather in La Guajira is very hot and dry. Even though you are right next to the ocean, the weather more reflects the desert. I was constantly sweating. I am glad that I had suntan lotion!
There were not many animals in la Guajira, but I noticed that there were goats, iguanas, poisonous wasps, snakes, pelicans and vultures. Its difficult for animals to live in the desert. Animals require certain adaptations to survive in the desert. For example, goats survive without a lot of water. Similarly, iguana's scales protect them from the heat. Poisonous wasps benefit from the heat and arid climate by forming nests. In contrast, there was a snake hiding under the base of our hostel building to shade itself from the heat, and nest in the cool dirt. Vultures survive in the desert by living off of dead animals. They are considered scavengers.
