Community Overview

Introduction:

As you all know, I've been staying in San Jose and living with my homestay family for about three months now. Thoughout this time, I have felt quite comfortable. My neighborhood is very safe and relaxing. I have noticed that many of the neighbors have their own morning routine, whether that's working on their garden, going on a morning walk or just enjoying the morning.  I've had quite a few interactions at social events, in which I've spoken with many ticos/ticas (natives of Costa Rica) and they have been more than happy to talk of their origins and about their everday lives.

What community need did I learn about?:

Throughout my time in Costa Rica, I have learned about the city of San Jose and the communities around the beach towns. San Jose is much like any city you could think about; it has tall skyscrapers, many cars and traffic, plus it has the fast paced feeling of a busy city. In San Jose, there are many people who strive to make a living using their own means, and this can be very difficult for them to do. Through my observations of life here, I believe that it would be helpful to have a nationwide government assistance program for those earning below a certain level of income. I believe that this would meet an important need in the community.
