Pedestrians and Public Transportation, Oh My!

Introduction:

Much like New York City, Lyon is a bustling city with many modes of transportation. The metro, the bus, bicycles, scooters, cars and walking are all very popular ways of getting around. During my time in Lyon, I have explored the city mostly on foot. Almost everything is within walking distance and the streets are very walking-friendly. Each day, I walk about 30 minutes to school along the beautiful Rhône River, and I love passing different people going about their days!

How do people get around?:

There is not one main mode of transportation here in Lyon. While the French are known to use bicycles (maybe from the popular annual cycling race known as the "Tour de France"?), I have found that, while bikes are used, public transportation and walking are used most often by those in the city. Lyon has an extensive public transportation system that is clean, timely and efficient. The metro here looks a lot like the New York City subway, although instead of straight lines up and down avenues, the train paths are more windy. One thing I was surprised to see here were the electric scooters! You can find them everywhere on the street, and you can use your phone to activate and rent them for a certain amount of time. They are quite easy, fast and low-maintenance. I wish we had them in New York!
