Our News

What main languages are spoken here?:

German is the official language of Germany. Within Germany, there are many different kinds of German spoken, which are often called dialects. The dialects can be so different that the German that is spoken in southern Germany might be completely incomprehensible to someone who lives in northern Germany! The regional dialect of Mainz is called Rheinhessisch.

What type of money is used here?:

Germany uses the euro. The euro is the second largest and second most traded currency in the foreign exchange market after the United States dollar.

How much does a bottle of water cost?:

A bottle of water costs about $1.14. If you are drinking water at a restaurant, it might be even more expensive. German restaurants usually don't serve free tap water like restaurants in the United States, so if you ask for water, you will almost always have to pay for a bottle of it!

What was the best meal this week?:

The best meal I had was homemade crepes in Amsterdam. European crepes aren't always sweet like they usually are in America, but they can be filled with meats and cheeses, too. For dinner on our first night in Amsterdam, we made crepes filled with ham, sauteed vegetables and fresh gouda cheese. They were so delicious.
