Are you ready for this week's German lesson? Here are some words that are important when talking about this week's topic:
Umwelt- Environment
Recyceln- to recycle
Pfand- Deposit
When I first arrived in Austria, I was suprised at how different little things in my everyday life could be. One of these is throwing away trash. Seems silly, doesn't it? It's not as simple here as just throwing away your garbage. There's a system to managing waste that ensures that as little trash as possible ends up in landfills, which helps to reduce the impact on die Umwelt (the environment). Instead of having one big trash can, I separate my trash into six different categories that each have their own can or bin: paper, plastic, glass, metal, bio-waste, and restmull (everything left over).
As you probably already know, two of the biggest issues we are facing in the world today is harm to the environment through pollution and climate change. These issues are very important to Austrians. Austria is home to beautiful natural landscapes that are at risk of being polluted. There are also many snow-covered mountains and glaciers that could be affected by rising temperatures.
