It's so hard to believe that it's only been six months since I left the United States to become a teacher in Germany. Time has flown by so quickly. I feel like I just got here! Having the opportunity to share my language and culture with students from ages 11 to 19 here in Essen has given me some of the best memories and experiences that I could ask for. Their honesty and curiosity are unmatched, and they keep me looking forward to going into work every day of the week.
When I first came to Germany, I was under the impression that I would only stay for one year. That's how long the Fulbright scholarship lasts for. Recently I've thought to myself, "Well that's not long enough!" Especially seeing that I have about four months left of my initial term, it truly saddens me to think that this time may come to an end. However, after asking around about any further options to possibly stay in Germany, I found out that it's possible for me to stay another year as a teacher here! That would give me the chance to finish out this school year and even see my students progress as they go into the next grade. I applied for this position as soon as I could, so hopefully in the next few months, I will find out if I'll be allowed to stay longer.
