In Cork, there is a famous market called the English Market, which contains many vendors who sell agricultural products from all over Ireland including eggs, milk, meats, fish, seafood, fruits, vegetables, baked goods, and various other imported items such as olives and oranges. The olives come from Italy and the oranges come from Spain. I love knowing where my food comes from and all that goes into my dinner.
A large portion of the Irish population works in the agricultural industry, many as farmers. As you drive through the countryside, you'll see many fields full of sheep and cows scattered throughout the rolling green hills.
The United States has had many Irish immigrants, which has influenced American cuisine so much so that many Irish dishes will likely sound familiar or you might even consider them American in origin. The most famous Irish dish is Irish stew. Irish stew is like a big soup filled with lamb, carrots, potatoes and spices. Since Ireland is an island, they also have a lot of seafood and one of their most famous dishes is clam chowder, which is a creamy soup full of different types of fish and other seafood.
The Irish were also connected to England for a long time, so British food became a part of Irish culture. Examples include fish and chips and scones.
