Most cities across the world, as they become more populated, naturally seem to become dirty just because of the nature of being a city. With millions of people living in such a small space, the pollution and garbage can become a serious problem. For this reason, Singapore takes many proactive measures to maintain a clean city, including hiring almost 70,000 public cleaners around the city! By comparison, many cities only hire a couple thousand, and the difference really shows!
It seems one of the greatest public services Singaporeans desire is cleanliness. All of the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) stations I have been to have been almost spotless, which is incredible considering the thousands of people that must enter and exit each day. Even better, the actual train and subway cars are extraordinarily clean as well! Many sidewalks and areas around the city are regularly swept and maintained to keep Singapore looking as shiny as ever. Outside of my own dorm room, they even pressure wash the sidewalks regularly to remove any remnants of dirt or grime.
