The MRT: Singapore's Fast Public Transport System

Introduction:

Due to high traffic and crowded roads, people who live in cities often prefer not to drive. Even if someone wanted to drive in Singapore, the cost of buying and maintaining a car can be very high. Singapore is on an island, and all cars have to be imported. This means they are shipped from other countries to Singapore--not made in Singapore. This makes most cars very expensive. Additionally, the people of Singapore have to pay road taxes and other fees to the government every year in order to own a car, and due to the limited amount of space in the country, people can pay a lot of money just to have space to park their car.

How do people get around?:

Because owning a car is so expensive, Singaporeans use public transportation instead. The two main methods of public transportation are buses and the MRT.  Personally, I have only taken a public bus once or twice because the MRT is much more convenient.  Some people drive cars, and many drive motorcycles or mopeds (similar to a scooter).  Motorcycles and mopeds are convenient because often times Singaporeans will drive between cars. While it helps them skip through traffic, it is very dangerous and can cause a lot of accidents.
