Sustainable Habits

Introduction:

One difference I have adapted to since living in Aix-en-Provence, France is sorting my trash according to the strict and highly enforced trash separation rules, here. While in many places in the United States, it is common to separate trash, compost and recycling, the culture in France places an even greater emphasis on this aspect of sustainability. Additionally, the community here is committed to living sustainably by avoiding single-use plastics.

What community need did I learn about?:

I learned about the elaborate trash collection service in Aix-en-Provence and the importance of properly sorting garbage. Both sustainability and cleanliness are highly important cultural values in the South of France. As a result, trash, compost and recycling are collected separately every day, and the streets are cleaned with large water hoses each morning before most people are even awake.

Why does the community have this need?:

Because of the size and density of the population in France, is it necessary for every community member to be conscious of their own sustainability practices and the waste they produce.
