“Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” This is a quote by Nelson Mandela that I recently saw painted onto the wall of a school. The quote stuck with me because it reflects why I am in the Dominican Republic and the goal of my service. While the school systems in the Dominican Republic have a lot of strengths, there are a lot of outside factors that contribute to the overall success of the students.

As a Peace Corps volunteer in the Dominican Republic, my presence in my community is based on a specific community need that the people of the Dominican Republic and my school view as a necessity. The Peace Corps has been in the Dominican Republic for 64 years now and to my knowledge, the Spanish Literacy Promoter position has been around from the start.
