Hello everyone! My name is Jess, and I’m excited to be your Reach the World Host for an awe-inspiring nine-day virtual exchange expedition to the Peruvian Amazon. Before I share a bit more about myself, let’s explore where we’re headed! I hope you’ll be inspired to do your own research and help us decide what to learn about.
On October 12, we’ll begin our journey by flying to Lima, the capital of Peru. It’s going to take us two flights and nearly the whole day to get there. We’ll leave Rhode Island (where I live) at 6:00 a.m. and won’t arrive in Lima until 9:00 p.m.—which will actually be 10:00 p.m. Rhode Island time, since Peru is one hour behind. Can you find Lima on a map? Did you know that Lima is the second-largest desert city in the world, after Cairo, Egypt? Even though it’s right next to the Pacific Ocean, it hardly ever rains!
The next day, we’ll explore Lima’s historic center, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You might be wondering what that means. A World Heritage site is a place that is considered important to all of humanity because of its cultural or natural significance. Lima’s historic center includes pre-Columbian temples, colonial mansions and modern buildings. We’ll visit the colorful Plaza de Armas, the main square of the city.
