How far did I travel this week?:

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

From Rhode Island to Lima (via Atlanta) was around 3,199 miles. From Lima to Iquitos was another 629 miles. And then from Iquitos to Nauta, we traveled 65 miles. On the Amazon River, we also traveled 50 miles on the boat and 30 miles on the skiffs.

How did I get around this week?:

This week, I traveled on the Amazon River, the Maranon River and the Ucayali River in Peru on a 160 foot riverboat called the Zafiro. To explore further into the Amazon and see wildlife or visit local communities, we used small boats called skiffs to go up shallow rivers and streams, called tributaries.

At night, we dock the riverboat by driving it into the muddy riverbank and tying it to a tree with a rope. The riverboat travels about 5 miles per hour upstream and 13 miles per hour downstream during the dry season (we are in the dry season, or low season at the moment). In the wet season, it goes much faster downstream and slower upstream.
