Caring for Cats in Lima, Peru

Introduction:

Hello from Lima, Peru! After a long day of traveling, we spent some time exploring the historic district yesterday. Usually, places near the Equator are very warm. However, the temperature here is a brisk 63°F, thanks to the Humboldt Current, which brings cool water up from Antarctica and keeps the city much cooler.

I want to share an interesting way Lima is meeting the needs of its stray cat population. We visited Kennedy Park, a beautiful park in the Miraflores district that has become a sanctuary for stray cats. The community here works hard to care for the cats, and it was fascinating to see how organized and thoughtful the project is.

Our trip mascot, Scout, even made some new friends! The cats in the park were so calm and tame that they sat still, even when we gently placed Scout on their backs.

What community need did I learn about?:

In Kennedy Park, the community has created a sanctuary for stray cats. There were many stray cats in this part of Lima, and rather than just leaving them on their own on the streets, the community here has built a special place where the cats can live safely.

Why does the community have this need?:

The need for this sanctuary comes from the large number of stray cats in Lima, especially in busy areas like Kennedy Park.
