The fertile soil along the Rhine River makes it ideal to farm many things, but the flat land near the river and the climate (the weather and temperature over the entire year) makes it especially ideal to farm asparagus. Remember that asparagus is "perennial," meaning that you can plant one plant and then it won't die when you harvest it like other plants. It also means that you don't have to purchase seeds every year to keep growing it. Welcome to the land of asparagus!
There are always fungi, insects, and bacteria that love to eat asparagus as much as we do. However, growing other things with or near the asparagus helps make sure that an asparagus plant stays healthy until it's ready to harvest. Once you harvest, it's time to cook it. My tour guide said that the best way to make a person from this area happy is to roast white asparagus in the oven with butter and then sprinkle it with a pinch of brown sugar when it's done cooking. Enjoy!
