Travel News

How did I get around this week?:

When I am in my community, I walk everywhere I go. However, when I am traveling around or leaving my community to get groceries, I always use public transportation. The buses here are called guaguas. To travel far distances there are larger guaguas with air conditioning and music; however, the typical guagua that travels short distances are called guaguitas. The guaguitas tend to be smaller with space for maybe 12 people, but you can actually fit about double that amount.

What was the most interesting place I visited this week?:

The most interesting place I visited this week was Bani, a town in the DR known for its production of mangos. Last year, I had the opportunity to go to the mango festival, but unfortunately, couldn’t explore the nearby sand dunes. This year I hopped on an earlier bus from my community and because of that, I had the time to stop and sand surf, which was a lot more difficult than it looks.
