Now that we are entering a remote natural area, we can expect animals to be present! It’s not that we have had issues with bears, for example, but we always carry bear spray (pepper spray) just in case. We usually see their tracks and poo as travel. When driving on the unpaved roads, on the other hand, it is pretty common to see moose and bears.
Our short hike crosses a forest until we make it to the peatland. Once there, because the soil is often inundated by water, we need to wear rainboots to walk on the boardwalks that were built for studies in the area. We walk carrying all the equipment, food and water in backpacks until we get to a small woodshed we use for storage. This helps to hide it from bad weather and critters like black flies and bears.
