My Trip to Norway

Introduction:

Norway is a country north of Poland.  It has a very different environment than Poland, and it is much colder there.  I visited the capital city, called Oslo.  This city is special because it is on the coast surrounded by water and has mountains behind the city.  Because the city is located far in the north, they have unusual weather conditions that can make it difficult for humans to live there.

What makes this environment special or different?:

Since the city is located far in the north, in the winter residents of Oslo often experience vey short days.  For example, in December the sun may not rise until 10:00 AM and will set as early as 2:00 PM. Can you imagine only having only four hours of daylight each day?  I have always felt sad when the sun sets before 5:00 PM back in the United States.  It is hard to imagine how the residents learn how to deal with it being dark almost all of the time in winter.

Interestingly, in the summer there is almost no darkness.  The sun may not set until midnight.  I think it would be very strange to have no darkness all day!

Can you explain why it is so dark in the winter months and so light in the summer months in Norway?
