Famous School Traditions: Sports Day!

On Saturday, December 2nd, we will have a big special day to celebrate both big traditions. Because this is such a big event, our school also has a couple practices before we have our celebration. Our first practice was today! I took lots of pictures that you'll be able to look at.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Schools have Sports Day as a fun way to let students work with their teachers and classmates! Students have a lot of fun learning different relay races and dances in their classes. Students also practice learning different songs they can perform. For example, my first-grade students have been learning a song to help learn some of the letters of the alphabet. When it was their turn, they got to perform it for everyone today! They did such a good job!

My favorite part of the sports day practice today was getting to see the students do the events they've been working on so hard in class. In our P.E. classes, we've spent a lot of time practicing the relay race. It was so nice to see the students do it so well today! I know they'll crush it on Sports Day.

It is also very special for the community. A lot of the ceremonies in Sports Day have been practiced for many years. Also, all of the students' parents can come watch! They love seeing their children do all these fun events together.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Many traditions in Taiwan have some connection to the environment, especially holidays. The school Sports Day does not have a big connection to the environment, but all of the students and their families get to spend the day outside in the sun.
