What started as a way to show my friends and family what was happening on my expeditions has now turned into a career. I LOVE my job! I looks forward to sharing all the cool science that is happening onboard, as well as sharing a couple of Salty Sea Tales if you like!
How did you get involved with the expedition?
Tessa: I applied to be an Outreach Officer for the expedition in 2022 and was recruited to join Expedition 393. That was my first time sailing at sea for a long stretch of time, but it was such an amazing opportunity that I couldn’t say no when I was asked to join one more expedition - this one! Science education is really important to me because I want to make sure every learner feels empowered to keep asking questions without fear, no matter what their age!
Larkin: While working as a mate on one of my former research vessels, I loved to share the videos that I was making with the scientists onboard. My goal is to make science accessible for everyone using fun, interactive videos! After seeing a few of my videos, one of the scientists suggested I apply for the JOIDES Resolution because it seemed like a good fit. As it turns out, it was a perfect fit, and now I get to take you all on tours of this amazing ship. Going from salty sailor to science communicator has been a dream come true, and I can’t wait to show you around the ship.
What do we do before we sail?
Before sailing, all Outreach Officers are trained on what to expect and what to do while on the ship a full year ahead of their expeditions.
