Schnitzel, Potatoes, and More Potatoes!

Introduction:

When one thinks of traditional German food, meat and potatoes tend to come to mind. While exploring Göttingen, my friend and I went to a restaurant called Kartoffelhaus (literally, “potato house”) and tried a variety of dishes, all of which included potatoes. Of course, I had to try the schnitzel, which is a very traditional German meal.

What food did I try?:

The dish served at the Kartoffelhaus restaurant included Teufelsschnitzel (devil schnitzel) with Kroketten (potato croquettes, or fried mashed potatoes). This schnitzel was made to be spicy - hence the name “devil schnitzel” - with paprika (bell peppers), chili peppers, green peppers and tomato sauce. The Kroketten are fried mashed potatoes. I also had Kartoffel-Lauchcremesuppe (potato leak cream soup) for an appetizer, which had seeds on top. Pumpkin soup, which is also popular in Germany, also has seeds.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

The schnitzel was warm and filling, and I loved having the sauce with it. I have had many fried foods back in the U.S., but I have never had fried mashed potatoes, so the Kroketten were an adventure! My friend also had a potato burger, so instead of two bread buns, the meat was between two buns made of potatoes.
