Even before I left for Panama, I planned a visit back to the United States. I knew that I would take a vacation and go back to the United States during my Peace Corps service in May of 2024 so that I could attend my sister’s college graduation. When I left for the Peace Corps last year in June, this vacation seemed so far away for me, and kept feeling like that, especially when I was homesick. However, the days passed by, and before I knew it, it was time to start packing and leave for Panama City to get on my flight to Newark, New Jersey. The day I left, I went around saying goodbye to many members of my community, telling them I’d be leaving for a bit, but assuring them I would be back in June. I received many hugs, and many people told me to give saludos (hellos) to my family for them.
As I arrived Panama City on the bus, it hit me then that I was going to be outside of Panama very soon. The bus I was on was very crowded, and it was such a struggle juggling the large bags I had brought with me. I left for Panama City with time to spare before my flight, so I could get some souvenirs for my family and tie up any last-minute loose ends. I was able to bring back some Panamanian coffee (Café Duran) for my family, and some other snacks as well.
