Food is Life!

Introduction:

As we know, in America, a lot of peoples' favorite foods are things like pizza, cheeseburgers, sushi, tacos and chips. But in some places around the world, these American foods are considered "treats" and are usually more expensive and hard to find. In Ukraine, we don't eat things like that. Ukrainians eat a lot of varenyky (a pasta-like ravioli), borscht (beet soup), salo (meat fat), eggs, sausage, cabbage and lots of potatoes! We also drink a special fruit juice called compote. Fast food is not common here. In fact, in town, you can see Ukrainians carrying their own packed lunches everywhere instead of eating at restaurants or shops during the day.

What food did I try?:

Having been here for quite a while now, I've tried all of the Ukrainian foods! During the week, I cook a lot of varenyky and cabbage. Most fresh vegetables are unavailable in the winter except cabbage, potatoes, beets, carrots and onions, so I do my best to still make delicious meals. In the summer, we try and preserve as many fruits and veggies as possible so we are still able to eat them in the colder seasons.

A really interesting new dish that I've eaten is "Crab Salad." It is usually served during the Christmas holidays.
