There are many types of transportation in Ukraine. Depending on where I'm traveling, I mostly walk, get driven in my friends' cars or take the marshrutka (local bus). What types of transportation do you typically use in America?
People get around by car, marshrutka or bigger coach buses, sleeper-trains, bicycles, scooters and sometimes their horses. In the capital Kiev -- which can also be spelled 'Kyiv' -- there is also a metro system. Generally, transport here is similar to America, but not as many people have cars, so people here have to think of other ways to travel around.
It initially felt strange because I had a car in America and drove everywhere! Here, I have to give myself more time to travel because buses are slower than if I were driving in a car.
When you drive in your own car, you might just be traveling on your own or with your family and friends. But on buses or walking around, you get to talk to everyone and become much more aware of the local community. Using marshrutkas every day has definitely connected me more to Ukraine as I get the chance to socialize and see new local sights.
